IN 2009,

BROTHER HOUSINGS FOUNDER, JASON LIEBENBERG WAS MIDWAY THROUGH HIS GRAPHIC DESIGN DEGREE AT A SMALL COLLEGE IN DURBAN. A FRIEND, HAD JUST PURCHASED A LOCALLY MADE HOUSING, AND WAS SHOWING OFF SOME OF HIS WAVE SHOREBREAK PHOTOS. 

FOR YEARS, JASON HAD THE DESIRE TO CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF THE OCEAN WAVES – SOMETHING HE HAD SO ADMIRED SINCE THE DAY HE STARTED SURFING AT A VERY YOUNG AGE. HE HAD BEEN GIVEN AN OLD DSLR AND SET OUT TO GET HIMSELF A HOUSING. JASON COULDN’T AFFORD TO PURCHASE A HOUSING, SO HE APPROACHED CO-FOUNDER AND BROTHER, BRETT LIEBENBERG WHO HAS ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE AND A DEFINITE APTITUDE WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING WITH HANDS. 

"KEEP MY CAMERA DRY, LET ME TAKE PHOTO'S"

TOGETHER, JASON AND BRETT BEGAN DESIGNING A HUMBLE HOUSING TO ACHIEVE THE NEEDS OF THE SIMPLE BRIEF “KEEP MY CAMERA DRY, LET ME TAKE PHOTOS”.  THE FIRST HOUSING WORKED, ALBEIT A BIT CUMBERSOME AND TIME CONSUMING TO SEAL UP. THE BUG HAD BITTEN AND JASON MADE GOOD USE OF THE HOUSING UNTIL HE REALIZED THAT IT NEEDED TO BE LIGHTER, SMALLER AND EASIER TO USE. THE DUO WENT BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD, AND SMALL WORKSHOP AT THEIR PARENTS HOUSE AND DEVELOPED A BETTER HOUSING.

THE TURNING POINT FOR THE COMPANY CAME ABOUT DURING THE THIRD HOUSING DESIGN PROJECT THAT THE DUO TACKLED. JASON WORKED OUT THAT IT WOULD COST HIM THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY TO BUILD THE NEW MODEL HOUSING AS IT WOULD COST TO IMPORT ONE FROM THE STATES. HOWEVER, HE WANTED TO PUT HIS GRAPHIC DESIGN AND BRANDING KNOWLEDGE TO THE TEST AND DECIDED TO CREATE THE BROTHER HOUSINGS BRAND AND MARKET THE PRODUCT TO FELLOW PHOTOGRAPHERS IN DURBAN. THE SALE OF 4 HOUSINGS WOULD SEE HIM BREAK EVEN, AND THAT WAS WHERE HE HAD ENVISIONED TO LEAVE IT. 

 

"IT WOULD BE THE BEST PRODUCT THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE"

WITHIN A FEW WEEKS, THE BROTHER HOUSINGS NAME AND PRODUCT SPREAD, AND 10 ORDERS HAD ROLLED IN FOR THE FIRST MODEL. JASON AND BRETT DECIDED THAT IF THEY WERE TO PUT A PRODUCT OUT THERE, IT WOULD BE THE BEST PRODUCT THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE. THEY HIT THE WORKSHOP ONCE AGAIN AND DEVELOPED A NEWER, IMPROVED HOUSING. THIS TREND CONTAINED, ALONG WITH THE ORDERS UNTIL EARLY 2015 WHEN JASON DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO REALLY RAMP UP THE PROFESSIONALISM OF THE PRODUCT AND BRAND AND BEGAN THE PROCUREMENT PROCESS WHICH WOULD LEAD TO THEIR CURRENT, BEST SELLING MODEL, THE CARBON-X. 

"HOUSINGS HAVE FOUND THEIR HOME ON ALMOST EVERY CONTINENT"

FAST FORWARD TO TODAY, 6 MONTHS SINCE THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW MODEL, AND 65 HOUSINGS HAVE FOUND THEIR HOME ON ALMOST EVERY CONTINENT ON THIS PLANET. BROTHER HOUSINGS CONTINUES TO MAKE WAVES IN THE UNDERWATER CAMERA HOUSINGS SCENE. JASON HAS TAKEN ON THE POSITION AS A FULL TIME HOUSING BUILDER AND MANAGER OF THE BUSINESS. HE LOOKS TO CONTINUE THE EVOLUTION OF THE BRAND AND PRODUCT OFFERING WITH SOME EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS AROUND THE CORNER.

BROTHER HOUSINGS BEGAN AS A NEED TO SUPPLY JASON WITH A HOUSING, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT LED TO A NEED TO SUPPLY PHOTOGRAPHERS WITH THE MOST AFFORDABLE HOUSING ON THE MARKET. THIS, IN TURN, ALLOWING MORE AND MORE PHOTOGRAPHERS TO EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF SHOOTING IN THE WATER. JASON IS EXTREMELY PROUD TO STILL HOLD THESE SAME VALUES, AND STILL HOLD CLAIM TO BE THE MOST AFFORDABLE HOUSING PRODUCT ON THE MARKET, WITH THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE – THAT CUSTOMERS ACTUALLY ATTEST TO.
